PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE - 4/21/2026 ON PROPOSED WASTEWATER COLLECTION SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS
Project Planning Public Meeting: Plaza Drive Lift Station, Sewer Main, & Force Main Replacement
Benton Charter Township will hold a public meeting on proposed wastewater collection system improvements for the purpose of receiving comments from interested persons. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at the Benton Charter Township offices located at 1725 Territorial Road, Benton Harbor, MI 49022.
The purpose of the proposed project is to renew aging wastewater system pipes and pumps for reliable operation. The Plaza Drive Lift Station has reached its expected useful life. In addition, the lift station pumps to aging pipes that are undersized and have a high risk of failure. Project construction will involve reconstruction of the Plaza Drive Lift Station, replacing 400 feet of undersized force main, and replacing 3,400 feet of aging gravity sewer pipe.
Impacts of the proposed project are anticipated to be very few. The work will be conducted within the existing rights-of-way on Plaza Drive, Napier Avenue, and Norton Avenue. Disruptions common to construction activities would be anticipated in this area.
The estimated cost to users for the proposed project will be $2.95 per residential equivalent user per month. The Township would intend to cover loan payments for the project under it's currently adopted rate plan. In addition, potential funding through the CWSRF is likely to reduce cost burden to the users due to anticipated financing terms.
Copies of the plan detailing the proposed project are available for inspection at the following location(s): https://preinnewhof.tuyu.io/publicDownload/d3r1r3qq08acajob.
Written comments received before the 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2026 meeting will receive responses in the final project planning document. Written comments should be sent to Benton Charter Township Clerk Carolyn Phillips at cphillips@bentonchartertownship-mi.gov.
